Antonio Miguel was born in Nogales, Sonora, near the Mexican/US border. He was raised in Mexico City and was exposed to art from an early age; his middle class family had an appreciation of music and literature. As a child, Antonio Miguel sought the company of his older cousin, a very talented musician, writer, and painter, who would become a renowned journalist later in his life.

Given the traditions of that time, Antonio Miguel followed the formal education that would allow him to obtain a professional title and a job. He was thus diverted from the arts, his true passion and talent. He joined the science faculty and chose to study physics, one of the few topics that he didn’t mind that was also accepted by his family. Life, however, always ironic and sometimes incomprehensible, took him on a different road.

It was 1963, that fate led him to take a role as an actor in a university play. Soon after, he saw himself involved in the classical plays of Shakespeare and Voltaire. The early success of these performances took him away from the study of physics and math.

He tired had to divide his time and attention into both careers. Before he could finish his university career, however, something happened that would change his life forever. He was called to play a role in a famous soap opera (“Mama Campanita”) produced by Televisa, the largest television network in Mexico. This would be the first TV novella of more than 40 that he would participate in during his career. He also performed in numerous other TV and radio shows, movies, and theatre productions.

More recently, Antonio Miguel has gone back to some of his early passions: painting and ‘pirografia’ (pyrography) – the ancestral art of engraving wood using fire. This ‘therapeutic work,’ as he calls it, has led him to several gatherings among friends in which he has shown the results of his ‘therapies.’

Now living with his lovely wife in the beautiful colonial city of Morelia (Mexico), he makes frequent trips to Canada to visit his two daughters, who have made Lethbridge their home. As a semi-retired actor, he enjoys a fulfilling life, writing short stories, painting, and using pyrography to illustrate the fruit of his reflections.

Julie Duschenes' work is inspired by the Oldman River coulees and surrounding landscape.

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 21, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

The work in this exhibition is from an extended body of work made in response to the overpowering impression made on me by the coulees at first sight and continuing to this day.

I first visited Lethbridge in 1988 to present two slide lectures at the University of Lethbridge and, after that visit, kept coming back to work. The earliest coulee work in this exhibition was painted in 1993, shortly before I moved to Lethbridge from Vancouver and, over more than two decades, I have continued my attempts to re-embody the coulee.

I find that my most powerful and enduring experiences of the coulee are apprehended in seeing and hearing, and the images I have made are attempts to transcribe this non-verbal knowledge. To this end, I have made images in drawing and printing media, watercolour, acrylic and oil painting and present some of these to you, here.

Covers consists of oil paintings that I have produced depicting album cover art. I paint a representation of each album cover while listening to the album. Sometimes the painting is done first, sometimes the album is done first, but when the album is done the painting is done, that's the rule. The resulting paintings are painterly and expressive; thick impasto stabs of tactility and impression left as emotional responses to music and memory. The resulting catalogue unfolds like the snapshots of a photo album, emotional keepsakes that instantly transport us to a specific time and place, not unlike a song, an album, or that album's cover.

Artist’s Exhibition/Auction Opportunity in Celebration of Record Store Day, Saturday, April 16, 2011:

“SPIN”

In 1938, Columbia records hired Alex Steinweiss as its first art director and the concept of covers and cover art was born. In 1948, 10” and 12” LPs first appeared and box sets of 45 rpms soon followed. With these formats came a commitment to original album cover design as both a marketing tool and as a means for artists ...to further communicate the album’s intent. The development of album art, gatefold covers, inserts, lyric sheets, etc., soon made album covers a collectable commodity in their own right. Notable covers include Andy Warhol’s banana cover for “The Velvet Underground & Nico,” The Rolling Stones’ “Exile On Main Street” which had a gatefold cover and included 12 perforated postcards, and Robert Mapplethorpe’s photograph of Patti Smith on the cover of “Horses.”

Now it’s your turn to revive the 12” LP cover format which reigned from the 50s through to the mid-80s. Design an alternative cover for an existing album or devise a cover for an artist/group of your own creation. All submissions should be approximately 12.375”x 12.375”. Include your name, phone number and/or email address, and medium when you submit the work.

HERE’S THE KICKER: The works will be auctioned off at a SPIN Party with ALL proceeds going to the artists!!!
So, please include a minimum bid when you drop off your work.

Exhibition venues: Blueprint Entertainment (519 - 4 Avenue South) and Owl Acoustic Lounge (411 - 3 Avenue South).

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:CABINET OF QUEER-IOSITIES: Lethbridge Pride 2011.

Cabinets of Curiosities (or Wunderkammers) were collections of objects which would later be separated into the distinct categories of geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art, and antiquities. During the Renaissance such collections were shown together in what are now considered the early precursors of the modern museum.

Cabinet of Queer-iosities is an exhibition of small format works celebrating GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered) history and pride through a diverse range of subject matters and approaches. The exhibition will appear in the oak display cases at the Bowman Arts Centre from May 28 through July 10, 2011. Works that play with the Wunderkammer concept are encouraged.

This call is open to everyone but submissions should in some way address GLBT history and/or pride. Given the limited space and physical size of the cabinets, 2D and 3D pieces should not exceed 18" in any dimension.

The showcases are in a public hallway frequented by small children. Artists are asked to take this into consideration when submitting work for any exhibition in this space.

Our City Dreams, a new documentary by Chiara Clemente (daughter of artist Francesco Clemente), will debut at Film Forum, Feb. 4-17, 2009. Filmed over the course of two years, this “love letter” to New York City strings together self-told narratives by five women artists, ages 30 – 80: Swoon, Ghada Amer, Kiki Smith, Marina Abramovic and Nancy Spero. Each artist has a passion for making art that is inseparable from her devotion to New York.
Clemente captures significant moments in these artists’s lives, including Swoon’s first solo exhibition at Deitch Projects in New York, Ghada Amer’s return to her Egyptian homeland, Kiki Smith’s traveling retrospective, Marina Abramovic’s week-long series of performances at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and Nancy Spero’s preparation of a new piece for the 2007 Venice Biennale.
Ronnie Scheib in Variety writes that the film is “exquisitely crafted” and “ranks as a work of art itself.”

The Lethbridge Bestiary Project: Bestiaries were illustrated books of fabled animals and imaginary creatures, common during medieval times. Artists are invited to attend a workshop and assist in creating a bestiary of Lethbridge’s fabled creatures, A through Z. A workshop is being held at the Bowman, Saturday May 8, from 10am - 5pm, with a lunch being provided. At this workshop, artists will work in the creative laboratory of the studio on creating work for an exhibition. This exhibition will be held in the Bowman Arts Centre galleries July 17 - September 18, 2010. Artists will be expected to bring their own materials and media, though standard sized paper (sized to fit our exhibition frames) will be provided to work on. Please RSVP your attendance to this workshop by May 1. Everyone is invited to participate.

Call for submissions: Making It Big In Lethbridge

Scale is often a consideration when creating work. Sometimes the subject requires an intimate scale to draw the viewer in, and sometimes the artist is seduced by the sheer pleasure of working with a large format. The Bowman Arts Centre is looking for large works for an exhibition titled "Making It Big In Lethbridge". Artists from the community are invited to submit two-dimensional works (paintings, drawings, photographs or textiles) for inclusion in the show. The works can be new or old, and based on any subjects or motifs. The only requirement is that the works are at least 36" x 48" or larger. The exhibition will be held in the Bowman main gallery and at the Yates. The show will run April 10 - May 22, 2010. Please contact Darcy Logan no later than March 20 with questions or to confirm participation.

Kartemquin Films completes its chronicle of the work and times of the American artist, Leon Golub. Begun in 1985, the film ends with Golub’s death in 2004, taking us from searing images of interrogations and torture to the ironies and dark humor of old-age.

In 1969 three young artists living in Toronto changed their names to Jorge Zontal, Felix Partz and AA Bronson, formed General Idea and quickly became "art stars" in an international movement that was transforming conventional ideas about art. Director Mangaard presents a tribute to their achievements through an in-depth interview with Bronson and extensive documentation of their work. Influenced by semiotics, conceptual art and mass-media obsessions with glamour and celebrity, they used parody, irony and camp to subvert the constructs of popular culture. Despite their Miss General Idea Pageants and self-portraits that scream gay camp, their sexual orientation was not publicly mentioned until they began to create their important body of work dealing with the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s. The tragic AIDS-related deaths of Felix and Jorge in 1994 marked the end of GI as an artistic identity.
